Matthew 7:26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:

The house represents the man’s life, how he orders it and where his treasure resides. We cannot serve both God and Mammon. When life runs smoothly the foundations upon which our lives are constructed make little difference, but when we are faced with trial and adversity they become crucial. If we order our lives by the commandments of Christ we will see things in their proper perspective. The book of Job is an illustration of the value of a proper view of adversity. Job’s faith in God was not shaken by the enormity his suffering and in due time he reaped the reward.

Job 2:10 But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.

Job 13:15 Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him...

James commends him to us as an example.

James 5:11 Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.

If we serve God faithfully when life is easy, we can put our confidence in him when life becomes difficult.

James 1:12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation (trial): for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.

Psalm 112:1... When we reach the end of our pilgrimage and face our final adversary, death, we will have the confidence that it is but a sleep and we will awake to a newness of life when Christ returns.

If we fix our eyes on what God has promised to those that love and serve him we will be able to endure suffering as Jesus did.

Hebrews 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

2 Peter 1:4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; 6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; 7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. 8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. 10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: 11 For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
