A visitor writes,
"Good morning, can you explain me about Enoch and Elijah, where they went if no one but Jesus went to Heaven? Thank you."
Jesus makes clear that no one has ascended to heaven.
John 3:13 "No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven.
No one but Jesus goes to heaven. The Kingdom of God will be upon the earth when Jesus returns.
Enoch
Genesis 5:24 And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.
Hebrews 11:5 By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, "and was not found, because God had taken him"; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God.
Elijah
2 Kings 2:11 Then it happened, as they continued on and talked, that suddenly a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire, and separated the two of them; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.
Using Strong’s concordance:
Heaven <08064> שׁמים shamayim from an unused root meaning to be lofty; n m;
Translated in the KJV – ‘heaven’ 398 times, ‘air’ 21 times, ‘astrologers + 01895’ 1 time.
Meaning:
1) heaven, heavens, sky
1a) visible heavens, sky
1a1) as abode of the stars
1a2) as the visible universe, the sky, atmosphere, etc
1b) Heaven (as the abode of God)
From this, in view of Jesus’ clear statement, I think we must conclude that Elijah was taken up into the sky not into heaven as the abode of God.
What we can say for certain is that neither Enoch nor Elijah were taken to heaven.
This leaves us with 2 options:
Either:
1. They were taken by God and subsequently died and like Moses were buried by the angel of God in a place unknown. this is the most likely explanation.
2. They have been transported through time by God into the future kingdom of God. God is able to transport people through time into the future. This happened at the transfiguration on the mount where Jesus met with Moses and Elijah and spoke to them. The conversation seemingly about Jesus’ sacrifice having taken place, which was still in the future.
Luke 9:30 And behold, two men talked with Him, who were Moses and Elijah, 31 who appeared in glory and spoke of His decease which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.
They could not appear in Glory until after the sacrifice of Christ. Moses is certainly still dead, awaiting the resurrection.
Deuteronomy 34:5 So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD. 6 And He buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth Peor; but no one knows his grave to this day.
Similarly, we have the case of Paul who was taken in time to the third heaven – the new heaven (system of government) to be established on the earth in the future when Christ returns.
2 Corinthians 12:2 I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago—whether in the body I do not know, or whether out of the body I do not know, God knows—such a one was caught up to the third heaven.
Revelation 21:1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
Heaven and earth are here used figuratively to describe the new or4der of things when Jesus rules the kingdom of God on earth.
Peter explains the three heavens:
2 Peter 3:5 For this they wilfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, 6 by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water. 7 But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.7 But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men… 13 Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.
The actual answer to what happened to Enoch and Elijah will be revealed in the kingdom of God.
I hope this helps.
God bless,
