What is the last enemy of Jesus Christ? Is it the Devil/Satan as per Hebrews 2:14?

Hebrews 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

The devil aka Satan is the New Testament personification of the propensity to sin within man, both individually and collectively.

Jesus, born with our nature, had to overcome the propensity to sin within himself. He was tempted to sin exactly as we are.

  • Mark 7:21-23 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, 22 thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. 23 All these evil things come from within and defile a man.
  • James 1:14,15 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.

Jesus did not sin and so destroyed the 'devil' within himself:

  • Hebrews 4:15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.

This achieved two things:

  1. Having not sinned, God could not allow him to remain dead. Acts 2:24
  2. Having not sinned, he was a perfect sacrifice and able to make atonement for the sins of the faithful of all ages. Hebrews 10:12

The last enemy that is still to be destroyed is death itself. This victory will come at the end of Jesus’ millennial reign over the mortal population in the Kingdom of God. 1Corinthians 15: 20-28; 51-57.

At the end of the millennium there will be a second resurrection and a final judgment. All who live on after this will possess the divine nature. God will live in and with his people forever. Revelation 21:3-5
