In the King James version, what does "Lucifer" mean?

The word "Lucifer" occurs just once: Isaiah 14:12 How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, You who weakened the nations!

Lucifer is a description applied to the king of Babylon, as we learn from verse 4: Isaiah 14:4 That thou shalt take up this proverb against the king of Babylon...

Using Strong’s Concordance: Lucifer <01966>. הילל heylel; from <01984> (in the sense of brightness); the morning-star: — lucifer.

The NIV translates it thus: Isaiah 14:12 How you have fallen from heaven, O morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations!

It is a prophecy of the fall of the king of Babylon. He was subsequently killed, and his empire taken over by the Medes and Persians as recorded in Daniel: Daniel 5:30 That very night Belshazzar, king of the Chaldeans, was slain. 31 And Darius the Mede received the kingdom, being about sixty-two years old.
