Where in the Bible does it caution against arguing?

  • Proverbs 13:10 By pride comes nothing but strife, But with the well-advised is wisdom.
  • Proverbs 15:1 A soft answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger.
  • Proverbs 17:14 The beginning of strife is like releasing water; Therefore stop contention before a quarrel starts.
  • Proverbs 18:6 A fool’s lips enter into contention, And his mouth calls for blows.
  • Proverbs 22:10 Cast out the scoffer, and contention will leave; Yes, strife and reproach will cease.
  • Proverbs 20:3 It is honorable for a man to stop striving, Since any fool can start a quarrel.
  • Romans 12:18 If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.
  • 2 Timothy 2:23,24 But avoid foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they generate strife. 24 And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient,
  • James 3:17,18 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. 18 Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

On the other hand we must preach the Gospel as we have opportunity, which requires us to reason with people from the scriptures.

  • Jude 1:3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.
  • Acts 9:29 And he (Saul aka Paul) spoke boldly in the name of the Lord Jesus and disputed against the Hellenists, but they attempted to kill him.
  • Acts 17:2 Then Paul, as his custom was, went in to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures,
  • Acts 17:17 Therefore he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and with the Gentile worshipers, and in the marketplace daily with those who happened to be there.

I hope this helps.

God bless,
