What is the Devil?

Devil is the translation of the Greek word διάβολος diabolos

Using Strong’s Concordance: Devil <1228> διάβολος diabolos (from <1225> διαβάλλω diaballo; accuse verb) adj; Translated in the King James Version: ‘devil’ 35 times, ‘false accuser’ 2 times, ‘slanderer’ 1 time

Meaning:

  1. prone to slander, slanderous, accusing falsely;
  2. a calumniator (i.e. a liar), false accuser, slanderer,
  3. metaph. applied to a man who, by opposing the cause of God, may be said to act the part of a devil...

The idea that the ‘devil’ is a fallen angel who opposes God’s purpose is a slanderous falsehood. Angels obey God perfectly. See Psalms 103:20

The only thing in this world which is opposed to God is man himself. Mark 17:18-23

The term, "Devil" is always used metaphorically to signify the evil which comes from within man.

I hope you find this helpful.

God bless,
