What happens to us when we think very highly of ourselves?

To think very highly of oneself is to fall into the trap of pride. Pride is one of the things that God hates. See Proverbs 6:16-19

The proud will one day be brought low. Proverbs 15:25; Proverbs 16:5; Proverbs 16:19; Proverbs 21:4; Proverbs 29:23; Isaiah 2:12; Isaiah 57:15

Pride is part of the falling away from the truth in the last days. 2 Timothy 3:2

James tells us that God resists the proud. James 4:6

Peter advises us to be "clothed with humility". 1 Peter 5:5,6

God requires those who believe the Gospel to be humble. Matthew 18:4; Matthew 23:12
