What is the biblical view of the human body?

Adam was made in the image of God. Genesis 1:27

Adam was made from the dust (elements) of the earth. Because he disobeyed God he was condemned to die. In death he returned to the dust from which he was created. Genesis 3:19

Adam’s disobedience introduced sin and death to the world of his descendants.

Mankind has no conscious existence in death. Ecclesiastes 9:5; Psalms 146:4

Our only hope is that of resurrection from the dead at God’s appointed time in the future. This hope is based on an understanding of God’s purpose with the earth and man, and a willingness to believe God and try to live by his commandments whilst alive.

Briefly, resurrection is made possible by the sinless life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. To take advantage of Christ’s sacrifice we must understand the Gospel that he preached, repent of our sinful way of life, and be baptised into Christ by immersion in water for the remission of past sins.

In Christ we must try to live by his commandments. In Christ our body becomes a spiritual Temple of God. Therefore, we are to be holy in our lives. Resurrection will take place when Jesus returns to raise the responsible dead for judgment. The faithful will receive the divine nature and live forever. God will live in them and with them. Thus, men and women made in the image of God, will receive His nature, and become equal to the angels.

In conclusion, the Biblical view of the human body is:

  1. It is made from the elements found in the earth and is mortal.
  2. While alive, it has freewill and can choose whether it wants to be part of God’s purpose or not.
  3. God requires it to be holy in this life.
  4. At Christ’s return the bodies of the faithful will be changed into bodies energised by the Spirit of God.
  5. God will live in them and with them forever upon the earth.
  6. The unfaithful will perish forever.
