What is a grove in the Bible?

Two words are translated ‘grove’ in the King James Version Old Testament.

1. Genesis 21:33 And Abraham planted a grove<0815> in Beersheba, and called there on the name of the LORD, the everlasting God.

Using Strong’s Concordance: Grove <0815> אשׁל ‘eshel n m Translated in the King James Version – ‘grove’ 1 time; ‘tree’ 2 times. Meaning: 1) tamarisk tree

2(a) Deuteronomy 16:21 Thou shalt not plant thee a grove<0842> of any trees near unto the altar of the LORD thy God, which thou shalt make thee.

2(b) 1 Kings 15:13 And also Maachah his mother, even her he removed from being queen, because she had made an idol in a grove <0842>; and Asa destroyed her idol, and burnt it by the brook Kidron.

2(c) 2 Kings 21:7 And he set a graven image of the grove <0842> that he had made in the house, of which the LORD said to David, and to Solomon his son, In this house, and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all tribes of Israel, will I put my name for ever:

Using Strong’s Concordance: Grove <0842> אשׁרה ‘asherah or אשׁירה ‘asheyrah n pr f; Translated in the King James Version – ‘grove’ 40 times

Meaning:

  1. Babylonian (Astarte)-Canaanite goddess (of fortune and happiness), the supposed consort of Baal, and her images
  2. trees planted or poles set up near an altar
