How can we put Jesus first in our lives?

We put Jesus first in our lives by understanding, believing and obeying the Gospel that he preached.

To obey the gospel we must:

  1. Repent of our sinful way of life – i.e. change the way that we live.
  2. Be baptised by immersion in water for the forgiveness of our past sins.
  3. Live a new life by Jesus’ commandments that we find in the New Testament.

John 15:13,14 Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. 14 You are My friends if you do whatever I command you.

The commandments of Jesus must take precedence over our own desires. Jesus describes this as ‘denying ourselves and taking up our cross’:

Matthew 16:24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.

We cannot live a sinless life. After baptism we will still sin through weakness, but providing we are making a determined effort to live by Jesus’ commandments our sins wiil be forgiven by confession in prayer.

John explains:

1 John 1:7-9 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

When we are baptised, we are baptised into a body of believers. As a body we must meet regularly to share bread and wine in remembrance of Jesus’ sacrifice as Paul explains:

1 Corinthians 11:23-29 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, "Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me." 25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me." 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes. 27 Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.

We also have a duty to exhort one another and hold fast to the end.

Hebrews 3:12-14 Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; 13 but exhort one another daily, while it is called "Today," lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end..
