Ephesians 4:8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.
He ascended – Jesus Christ ascended to heaven after he was raised from the dead.
Led captivity captive - Men and women in their natural state are condemned to death and are therefore in a figure held captive or in bondage to sin.
Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
To save men and women, God fathered a Son Jesus Christ as foretold in the scriptures.
Isaiah 42:6 I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles; 7 To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house.

Jesus by his perfect life and sacrifice provided a way whereby men and women can be released from sin and death.
He holds the key to death and the grave.
Revelation 1:18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell (hades – the grave) and of death.
At the appointed time Jesus will return and raise the dead and give the faithful eternal life.
Romans 8:21 Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
2 Peter 1:4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
John 6:40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.
Gave gifts unto men – After his ascension the apostles were baptised with the Holy Spirit and were able to give Holy Spirit gifts to others by the laying on of their hands. In this way the early church grew very quickly.
John 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

Hebrews 2:4 God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?
