The doctrine that we live on after death and go to heaven or hell (or purgatory) is entirely false.

Adam was made a ‘living soul’.

Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

He sinned and was condemned to death.

Genesis 3:19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

All who sin are condemned to death.

Ezekiel 18:20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die…

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death…

We all sin and all die.

Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

When we die, we become a dead soul.

Psalms 89:48 What man is he that liveth, and shall not see death? shall he deliver his soul from the hand of the grave?

We go into the grave as a dead soul. The hope of the Bible is that of resurrection from the dead at a future time.

Acts 24:15 And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust.

Jesus died and as a dead soul was placed in the tomb. He was raised from the dead three days later. It was prophesied of him that his soul would not be left in the grave.

Psalms 16:10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell (sheol – the grave); neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

Acts 2:27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell (hades – the grave), neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

The translators have clouded the issue by translating the Hebrew and Greek words that mean the grave as ‘hell’.

The dead are described as sleeping.

We all experience the unconsciousness of sleep.

David for example:

1 Kings 2:10 So David slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David.

David corrupted into dust.

Acts 13:36 For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption:

David is not ascended to heaven.

Acts 2:34 For David is not ascended into the heavens…

No one other than Jesus has ascended to heaven, and Jesus ascended after his resurrection.

John 3:13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.

The dead are unconscious.

Ecclesiastes 9:5 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing…

Psalms 146:4 His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.

The responsible dead will be raised from the dead for judgment.

Daniel prophesies:

Daniel 12:2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

Jesus Christ is the one who will raise the dead for judgment.

John 5:28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, 29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation (condemnation).

All the faithful dead will be raised to receive their reward (eternal life) at the same time.

Hebrews 11:39 And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise: 40 God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.

The reward is eternal life in the kingdom of God upon earth. The kingdom of God will be established in two stages.

When Christ returns he will raise and judge the dead and restore the kingdom of David as the kingdom of God.

Luke 1:32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: 33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

The faithful will be given immortality and will rule over the mortal population of the earth for 1000 years.

Revelation 20:6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

At the end of this time there will be a second resurrection and a final judgment. Sin and death will be eradicated and all who live on will possess the divine nature.

Paul explains what is to happen:

1 Corinthians 15:20-28 But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept. 21 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. 23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming. 24 Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power. 25 For he must reign (the millennial reign), till he hath put all enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death. 27 For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him. 28 And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.

This will be the fulfilment of God’s purpose.

Numbers 14:21 But as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD.
