Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Principalities and powers are the rulers of this world. These Jewish and Roman rulers were responsible for the death of Christ and the persecution of the early church.

Luke 21:12 But before all these, they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name’s sake.

Darkness is ignorance of the truth concerning God’s plan and purpose. Those in darkness live in spiritual wickedness. Believers were in darkness before they heard and believed the gospel.

John 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

John 12:46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.

Ephesians 5:8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:

Christians are to obey the laws of the rulers where they do not conflict with the commandments of Christ. This because although the rulers are in darkness as far as the gospel is concerned, they are nonetheless put in power by God because God rules in the kingdoms of men.

Romans 13:1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

Titus 3:1 Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work,

Daniel 4:17… to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men.

Jesus will return and replace the evil governments of this world with the kingdom of God.
