Luke 17:21 Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.
The kingdom of God will not physically be established until Jesus Christ returns. The Jews were expecting it to happen in their life time. In line with Daniel’s 70-week prophecy they were looking for a Messiah who would drive out the Romans by force.
This wasn’t going to happen. Jesus was preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God. To be part of the future kingdom of God the Jews had to believe and obey the gospel, the same as we do. This is an internal change, within us – the way we think.
To be part of the kingdom of God they had to repent of their sinful lives and be baptised into Jesus Christ.
This required a change ‘within them’ as it now does within us. When we are baptised into Christ we are baptised into a body of believers.
Romans 12:5 So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.
1 Corinthians 10:17 For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.
Corinthians 12:12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.
The Greek word translated in most English versions as 'church' is 'ecclesia' which means ‘congregation’ not 'church' as in an institution. We are required to play our part in the edification of the body of believers – the 'church'.
We are to meet often to share bread and wine in remembrance of Jesus’ sacrifice.
1 Corinthians 11:23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: 24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. 25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. 26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.
We are to encourage one another.
Hebrews 3:13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
We are to care for one another.
1 Corinthians 12:25 That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another.
We are to be prepared to die for one another.
1 John 3:16 Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
If we don’t do these things we will not attain to the kingdom of God when Christ returns.
James 1:22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
I hope you find this helpful.
God bless,
