Abraham is a natural descendent of Adam and Eve; who were created by God.
Abraham is a son of God spiritually; in that he obeyed God.
Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
Abraham is called the friend of God because he believed God – he was a man of faith.
James 2:23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
God promised the land of Canaan to Abraham and his offspring for an everlasting possession.
Genesis 13:14... the LORD said unto Abram... Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward: 15 For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever.
God made a Covenant with Abraham which guaranteed his inheritance.
Genesis 15:8 And he said, Lord GOD, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it?..18 In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:
This Covenant guarantees resurrection to eternal life on the earth to Abraham and those who are counted as his offspring, because Abraham died in faith without receiving that which was promised.
Acts 7:5 And he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child.
Hebrews 11:13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises,
Being a natural descendent of Abraham is insufficient to inherit the promise. Only by faith in the promises made to him and a life lived accordingly can one have a part in the Covenant.
John 8:39 They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham’s children, ye would do the works of Abraham.
Romans 9:7 Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called.
The Law of Moses did not disannul the Covenant of promise.
Galatians 3:17 And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect.
Abraham understood the role of Jesus Christ in the ratification of the Covenant.
John 8:56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.
Galatians 3:7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham. 8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed. 9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.
Jesus Christ is the promised ‘seed’ through whom the gentiles can have access to the Covenant made with Abraham.
Galatians 3:14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith...16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ... 22 But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe... 29 And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.
To be ‘in Christ’ we must believe the gospel, repent of our sinful way of life and be baptised by immersion in water for the remission of our sins.
Acts 2:38... Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins...
Acts 22:16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.
After immersion by water into Christ we are to live a new life by his commandments.
Romans 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
Paul explains what is going to happen to those ‘in Christ’.
1 Corinthians 15:22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. 23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming. 24 Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power. 25 For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death. 27 For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him. 28 And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.
