Respect stems from two roots - admiration and fear. The Bible teaches that the "fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom" Proverbs 9:10. However we are also taught that "perfect love casts out fear" 1 John 4:18.

Love is a mature appreciation and commitment based on understanding and grows from initial feelings of respect. Love involves relationship and respect is but one of its facets. The word "perfect" in the phrase "perfect love" means whole, complete, mature. Love is the hallmark of a mature relationship with God.
