Sin, the disobeying of God’s commandments, separates man from God. On an individual basis the punishment for sin is death.

Psalms 146:4 His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.

On a national basis the punishment for sin is the dissolution and dispersion of the nation. The separation of God from his chosen people Israel because of their sin is plainly laid out in Scripture.

Isaiah 59:2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

Ezekiel 39:23 And the heathen shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity: because they trespassed against me, therefore hid I my face from them, and gave them into the hand of their enemies: so fell they all by the sword. 24 According to their uncleanness and according to their transgressions have I done unto them, and hid my face from them.

Micah 3:4 Then shall they cry unto the LORD, but he will not hear them: he will even hide his face from them at that time, as they have behaved themselves ill in their doings.

Luke 21:24 And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.

Fortunately for mankind it is an attribute of the glory of our creator that he is a God of love who delights in mercy.

Exodus 34:6 And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, 7 Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation (of them that hate me Exodus 20:5).

As individuals, to receive remission for our sins we must believe the gospel, repent of our old way of life, be baptised and live a new life by Christ’s commandments.

Mark 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned (condemned).

Sins committed after baptism can be forgiven by repentance and confession in prayer.

1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. 8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

When Christ returns we will be raised from the dead and given eternal life in the kingdom of God.
