The word variance occurs twice in the King James Version:
Matthew 10:35For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
This word in the original Greek is dichazo which means to sever or split apart or separate. Modern translations just use the word "against" and leave out "variance".
Galatians 5:20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies
This word in the original Greek is eris which means strife or discord. Modern translations use words such as strife, discord, contention, and one even uses "fits of passion" instead of "variance".
