The word translated faith in the New Testament is the Greek word ‘pistis’.

Using Strong's concordance and reference numbers:

Faith [ 4102 ] pistis; Translated in the AV-faith 239 times, assurance 1 time, believe + 1537 1 time, belief 1 time, them that believe 1 time, fidelity 1 time.

Meaning: Conviction of the truth of anything, belief; generally with the included idea of trust.

Unlike in English, ‘faith’ in the Greek is the noun associated with the verb ‘to believe’. Faith then is a firm belief in something.

What does the Bible tell us about faith?

  1. Faith is a belief that God exists and that if we diligently seek him he will reward us. Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him (God): for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
  2. Faith requires a belief that God made the worlds by speaking the word (as described in Genesis – ‘God said’...’and it was so’. Hebrews 11:3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
  3. Faith is the means whereby both Jew and Gentile will be justified (made righteous). Romans 3:30 Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.
  4. Faith must include a belief about Jesus Christ.  Galatians 3:22 But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.
  5. Faith requires us to believe that Christ is ‘he’ – which ‘he’ is he talking about? John 8:24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.
  6. Faith requires us to believe that Christ is the son of God. Matthew 16:16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
  7. Faith requires us to believe that Christ is the only way to God. John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
  8. Faith requires us to hear what he says. Matthew 17:5 While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.
  9. Faith requires a belief that Christ died for his friends and his friends are made up of those who obey his commandments. John 15:13, 14 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. 14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
  10. Faith requires us to believe the gospel and be baptised. Mark 16:15,16  And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.   11. Faith requires us to work the works of faith. James 2:14-20 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? 17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
  12. The end of this faith is salvation. 1 Peter 1:9 Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.

In conclusion Faith is not an emotional response to, or a blind belief in, something we can’t understand; but rather a reasoned and logical belief in what God has caused to be written in the Bible and acted on accordingly in our lives.

The Bible explains why we die and how we can be saved by belief and obedience to the gospel of the kingdom of God as preached by Jesus Christ and his apostles.
