Jesus was there. Jesus was raised from the dead and taught the disciples for 40 days after his crucifixion and prior to his ascension.  Your question seems to be based on the supposition that Jesus died and that was the end of him.  It wasn't. 

Also, you are forgetting that the gospels were inspired by God. See  2Peter 1:19-21. So, even if Pilate had been muttering words to himself with no one else present, we still could have known about it through the inspiration of the Gospel writers by the Holy Spirit of God.
