The cost of following Jesus will be different for each person given the circumstances and the environment in which they live.  The focus should never be on what we must "give up" but rather what we have to gain. No amount of suffering, persecution, or trial of any kind can compare with what God has prepared for those who love him.  Here is Paul's statement of the right attitude:

Philippians 3:7,8 But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ.   Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ.
