(All quotations from the King James translation unless stated otherwise).
There is a tendency in many to work hard only while their supervisors are watching them. A Christian should work equally hard whether being watched or not. He should work as if he was working directly for God.
The Greek word translated eyeservice occurs twice.
Ephesians 6:6 Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart;
Colossians 3:22 Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God:
The New Revised Standard Version translates the word as follows:
NRSV Ephesians 6:6 not only while being watched, and in order to please them, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart.
NRSV Colossians 3:22 Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything, not only while being watched and in order to please them, but wholeheartedly, fearing the Lord.
Those who have believed the gospel and been baptised into Christ should do all to please God and not men. Their righteousness must exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees in this respect if they would enter into the kingdom of God (Matthew 5:20).
Matthew 6:5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
Matthew 23:5 But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,
Everything that we do must be done heartily to the glory of God.
Ephesians 6:7 With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men:
Colossians 3:23 And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;
1 Corinthians 10:31... whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
