I know that Elijah was a prophet but what did he do?

Elijah's role and work.

Thank you for asking a question on www.thisisyourbible.com

(All quotations from the King James Authorised translation unless stated otherwise).

The things that Elijah did are recorded from 1 Kings 17:1 through to 2 Kings 2:15. He prophesied in the days of Ahab, king of the northern kingdom of Israel (approx 873–853 BC). If you read the account you will see what things he did and what kind of prophet he was. If you have more specific questions please ask.

That which God prophesied through Elijah concerning Jezebel and the house of Ahab came to pass.

2 Kings 9:36 Wherefore they came again, and told him. And he said, This is the word of the LORD, which he spake by his servant Elijah the Tishbite, saying, In the portion of Jezreel shall dogs eat the flesh of Jezebel:
2 Kings 10:10 Know now that there shall fall unto the earth nothing of the word of the LORD, which the LORD spake concerning the house of Ahab: for the LORD hath done that which he spake by his servant Elijah.
2 Kings 10:17 And when he came to Samaria, he slew all that remained unto Ahab in Samaria, till he had destroyed him, according to the saying of the LORD, which he spake to Elijah.

God through the prophet Malachi promised to send Elijah to the Jews before the coming of their Messiah.

Malachi 4:5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD: 6 And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.

John Baptist came in the spirit and power of Elijah before Christ began his ministry.

Luke 1:17 And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

Elijah himself will be sent before Christ’s second coming. This is confirmed by Jesus.

Matthew 17:11 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things...

Elijah appeared with Moses in the vision of the kingdom of God.

Luke 9:28 And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray. 29 And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering. 30 And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias: 31 Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.

James highlights Elijah as an example of fervent prayer by a righteous man.

James 5:16... The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. 17 Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months.
