Mark 13:30 How did Jesus mean all would be fulfilled in his generation?

Did Jesus mean his generation or some future generation which would see the fulfilment of prophecy?

Thank you for asking a question on This is your Bible.

(All quotations from the New King James translation unless stated otherwise).

Mark 13:30 "Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place.

We can only explain it by understanding that Jesus is combining 2 prophecies in 1 and speaking of 2 different generations. He does this because there are 2 sieges of Jerusalem involved.

One is AD 70, the other is that of the last days, described in Zechariah 14:1,2.

1 Behold, the day of the LORD is coming, And your spoil will be divided in your midst.2 For I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem; The city shall be taken, The houses rifled, And the women ravished. Half of the city shall go into captivity, But the remnant of the people shall not be cut off from the city.

The situation is similar for both generations and the advice is the same. When they see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, they are to get out.

Luke 21:20 "But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is near.21 "Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those who are in the midst of her depart, and let not those who are in the country enter her.

The generation that saw the signs leading up to AD 70 was that of Jesus’ day. The generation that will see the end time prophecies leading up to Zechariah 14 is the generation that will be alive at the time. Zechariah 14 is the same event described in Ezekiel 38.
