I need a breakdown of Psalm 23:5.

The 23rd Psalm.

Thank you for asking a question on This is your Bible.

(All quotations from the New King James translation unless stated otherwise).

Psalms 23:5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over.

In the natural sense of the words, both David and Christ shared food at a table with their enemies. David with Ahithophel and Christ with Judas.

Psalms 41:9 Even my own familiar friend in whom I trusted, Who ate my bread, Has lifted up his heel against me.

John 13:18 "I do not speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen; but that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘He who eats bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me.’

The spiritual lesson is that God will provide that which we need in all the adversity of life. The food as the word of God is more important than the natural food.

Matthew 4:4 But He answered and said, "It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’"

Matthew 6:11 Give us this day our daily bread.

By extension the food is the work God requires us to do in adversity.

John 4:32 But he said to them, "I have food to eat that you do not know about”....34 Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to complete his work.

Christ finished his work in the midst of his enemies.

John 19:30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.

Because of his work God raised him to immortality – anointing him with the oil of gladness.

Psalms 45:7 You love righteousness and hate wickedness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.

Hebrews 1:9 You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your companions."

If we eat this bread (work his work) in the midst of adversity we too will be anointed with the oil of gladness at his return.

John 6:50 "This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die. 51 "I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world." 54 "Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.

Matthew 7:21 "Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.
