How does one sin against his body by fornication?

The physical and spiritual impact of sexual sins.

Thank you for asking a question on This is your Bible.

Marriage between a man and a woman faithful to each other for life is intended to reflect the relationship of Christ with his church.

1 Corinthians 6:18 Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.

There are two aspects to be considered.

1. By the act of sexual intercourse two bodies become one in the sight of God.

Genesis 2:24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

Ephesians 5:31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.

The body, which has become by baptism the temple of God, is itself irrevocably involved in the sin.

Instead of being one with Christ and covered by his righteousness, it becomes one with a sinner and becomes again a servant of sin.

1 Corinthians 6:15 Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid.

16 What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh.

17 But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.

19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

2. The gravity of the offence in the sight of God is such that the punishment under the Law was death without hope of the resurrection of life. God through Solomon hammers home the warning some 5 times in Proverbs.

Proverbs 2:1 My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee;

2 So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding;

16 To deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger which flattereth with her words;

18 For her house inclineth unto death, and her paths unto the dead.

19 None that go unto her return again, neither take they hold of the paths of life.

Proverbs 5:3 For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil:

4 But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a twoedged sword.

5 Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell (sheol – grave).

11 And thou mourn at the last, when thy flesh and thy body are consumed,

Proverbs 6:26 For by means of a whorish woman a man is brought to a piece of bread: and the adulteress will hunt for the precious life.

32 But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.

Proverbs 7:21 With her much fair speech she caused him to yield, with the flattering of her lips she forced him.

22 He goeth after her straightway, as an ox goeth to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stocks;

23 Till a dart strike through his liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life.

26 For she hath cast down many wounded: yea, many strong men have been slain by her.

27 Her house is the way to hell (sheol – grave), going down to the chambers of death.

Proverbs 9:16 Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: and as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,

17 Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.

18 But he knoweth not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell (sheol – grave).

In wilfully committing the sin a man forfeits both his life and his hope of eternal life, thereby destroying his own body which in Christ would to be raised to the divine nature.

It is possible for fornication to be forgiven (eg. David and Bathsheba; the Corinthian who had his father’s wife) but we would be very foolish to indulge in it on the presumption that it will be.

I hope this helps.
