Role of women in the church.
Thank you for asking a question on This is your Bible.
Ephesians 5:22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
Colossians 3:18 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.
For married couples who are baptised into Christ, their marriage is intended to reflect the relationship between Christ and his church. The commandment to wives to be in subjection to their husbands is coupled with the commandment to husbands to love their wives more than they love themselves.
Ephesians 5:22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. 24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. 25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; 28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.
Every decision a couple make and everything they do should be done in the name of Christ, without recrimination and bitterness.
Colossians 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. 18 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord. 19 Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.
This is a tall order for human beings and for marriage to work there has to be give and take on both sides; with the love of Christ being the aim in mind. By commandment the husband has the last word for he takes responsibility, but for a husband to completely disregard his wife’s opinion is not a demonstration of the love of Christ. It is possible that having taken into account his wife’s opinion his decision is not in agreement with it. We cannot demand that we have our own way, because this goes against the self-sacrifice that is enjoined upon us.
John 13:14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another‘s feet.
The love of Christ demands submission even to our enemies.
Matthew 5:44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
Submitting to another (where it does not contravene the commandments of Christ) is in itself an act of love.
1 Peter 5:5 ...Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.
Of Christ it is written that he humbled himself for each one of us.
Philippians 2:8 ...he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
Acts 8:33 In his humiliation he was deprived of justice...
The best advice I can give is that when we find ourselves in the kind of situation you describe we should ask ourselves ‘What would Jesus do?’
1 Corinthians 13:13 And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
