Where does it say that you can know God by your own feelings?

Do we need an external authority like the Bible to understand who God is?

Thank you for your question.

There is a certain irony in this question. God inspires some 40 writers (often in jeopardy of their lives) to write some 66 books. Yet the expectation is to find a verse in it that actually says:

‘Don’t worry guys, you don’t have to actually read the books, it was all a blind, all you have to do is just ask me and I will fill your brain with all you need to know about me with no sweat on your part.’

Does this seem a likely scenario? Would we not rather suppose that God intended us to read everything he has caused to be written; not just once but over and over again during our lifetime?

Proverbs 2:1 My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; 2So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; 3Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; 4If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; 5Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. 6For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. 7He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly. 8He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints. 9Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path. 10When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul;

We cannot audibly hear and receive the words of God we can only read them.

Psalms 119:103 How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth! 104Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way. 105Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

It is through the commandments precepts and testimonies of God that we come to know him.

Psalms 119:127Therefore I love thy commandments above gold; yea, above fine gold. 128Therefore I esteem all thy precepts concerning all things to be right; and I hate every false way. 129Thy testimonies are wonderful: therefore doth my soul keep them. 130 The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.

Jesus said the Sadducees were mistaken because they didn’t understand what was written.

Matthew 22:29Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures...

Jesus castigates his disciples for not believing what was written.

Luke 24:25... O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:

Jesus explains himself from the scriptures.

Luke 24:27And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

When Jesus explained the scriptures it was an eye opener.

Luke 24:32And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?

Paul used the scriptures to preach Christ.

Acts 17:2And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,

God’s purpose is made known by the scriptures which he expects to be believed and obeyed.

Romans 16:26But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith:

The sacrifice of Christ is to be understood from the scriptures.

1 Corinthians 15:3For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
The scriptures are written for our admonition.

1 Corinthians 10:11Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.

The scriptures are able to make us wise unto salvation.

2 Timothy 3:15And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

Scripture was written by inspiration.

2 Timothy 3:16All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
2 Peter 1:21For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. Jesus was the last of the prophets sent by God.

Hebrews 1:1God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, 2Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son,

For this reason we ought to pay more attention to what is written.

Hebrews 2:1Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.

Everything was written for our learning.

Romans 15:4For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.

Faith itself comes from the word of God.

Romans 10:17So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Jesus commissioned his disciples.

Mark 16:15And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. 16He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

The disciples are dead. The only way we can receive the gospel is by reading the words that they preached.

If we don’t read what they preached we can’t believe. If we can’t believe we won’t be baptised. If we’re not baptised we can’t be saved.

There is no easy route to knowing God. If we would know him we have to read what he has caused to be written.

I hope this helps.
