Who is Satan?

Is Satan really a fallen angel?

Thanks for your question.

Satan in the Old Testament means ‘adversary’ and is sometimes translated as such. The term is used of both men and angels. The choice of translating it or using it as a proper name is entirely the translators’ choice.

Using Strong’s number. Satan <07854> occurs in the following:

Nu 22:22, 32 And God’s anger was kindled because he went: and the angel of the LORD stood in the way for an adversary <07854 - Satan> against him. Now he was riding upon his ass, and his two servants were with him.... 32 And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these three times? behold, I went out to withstand <07854> thee, because thy way is perverse before me:

1Sa 29:4 And the princes of the Philistines were wroth with him; and the princes of the Philistines said unto him, Make this fellow return, that he may go again to his place which thou hast appointed him, and let him not go down with us to battle, lest in the battle he be an adversary <07854 - Satan> to us: for wherewith should he reconcile himself unto his master? should it not be with the heads of these men?

2Sa 19:22 And David said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah, that ye should this day be adversaries <07854 - Satans> unto me? shall there any man be put to death this day in Israel? for do not I know that I am this day king over Israel?

1Ki 5:4 But now the LORD my God hath given me rest on every side, so that there is neither adversary <07854 - Satan> nor evil occurrent.

1Ki 11:14, 23, 25 And the LORD stirred up an adversary <07854 - Satan> unto Solomon, Hadad the Edomite: he was of the king’s seed in Edom.... and God stirred him up another adversary <07854>, Rezon the son of Eliadah, which fled from his lord Hadadezer king of Zobah.... 25 And he was an adversary <07854 - Satan> to Israel all the days of Solomon, beside the mischief that Hadad did: and he abhorred Israel, and reigned over Syria.

1Chronicles 21:1 And Satan <07854> stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel.

Compare with: 2Samuel 24:1 And again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah.

Job 1:6-9, 12Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan <07854 > came also among them. And the LORD said unto Satan <07854>, Whence comest thou? Then Satan <07854> answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.And the LORD said unto Satan <07854>, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? Then Satan <07854> answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?.... 12 And the LORD said unto Satan <07854>, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan <07854> went forth from the presence of the LORD.

Job 2:1-4,6,7Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan <07854> came also among them to present himself before the LORD.And the LORD said unto Satan <07854>, From whence comest thou? And Satan <07854> answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.And the LORD said unto Satan <07854>, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause. And Satan <07854> answered the LORD, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life.
6 And the LORD said unto Satan <07854>, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life.

7 So went Satan <07854> forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.

Compare this with Job’s view of where the responsibility lay: Job 2:10 But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.

Ps 109:6 Set thou a wicked man over him: and let Satan <07854> stand at his right hand.

Zec 3:1,2 And he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan <07854> standing at his right hand to resist him. And the LORD said unto Satan <07854>, The LORD rebuke thee, O Satan <07854>; even the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire?

Satan in the New Testament is the personification of the predilection of man to sin in all its manifestations both singularly as individuals and collectively as governments.

I hope this helps,
