God exalted Jesus' name above the Bible or the Bible above Jesus' name. Which one is true?

Is anything or anyone exalted above God's word?

Thanks for asking a question on thisisyourbible.com.

Neither are true. You are confusing a statement in Psalm 138:2about God's name and His word with a New Testament attribution to Jesus.

Here's how the KJV puts his Psalm:

Psa 138:2 I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.

Here's the RSV's take on the same passage:

Psa 138:2 I bow down toward thy holy temple and give thanks to thy name for thy steadfast love and thy faithfulness; for thou hast exalted above everything thy name and thy word.

Here' how the NLT puts it:

Psa 138:2 I bow before Your holy Temple as I worship. I praise Your name for Your unfailing love and faithfulness; for Your promises are backed by all the honor of Your name.

To my mind, the RSV and NLT have rendered the sense of this passage correctly.

I think you probably are thinking about Philippians 2 in relation to Jesus:

Philippians 2:9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name...

Jesus is His Father's representative to us and one day will be ruler over all things on this planet. It is in this sense that he is exalted and has been given the name which is above every name.

Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

I hope you have found this helpful.

God bless,
Mike
