Do all people continue to sin?

YES – We cannot live without sinning – if we could then Christ need not have died for us. After baptism we still have the same nature. Forgiveness of sin after baptism is available by repentance and confession in prayer.

John explains:

1 John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

1 John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: 2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

Jesus Christ, at the right hand of God, is our high priest who makes intercession for us:

Hebrews 4:15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

Hebrews 7:26 For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;

Hebrews 7:25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

When we are baptised we become members of a body of believers and by continuing in fellowship we are to encourage each other to live by the commandments of Christ.

Acts 2:41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. 42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

Hebrews 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

From this we see that a change of lifestyle is necessary along with a reappraisal of the kind of people that we associate with. God requires us to ‘make straight paths for our feet’, in the way that we live.

Ephesians 5:11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them... 15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, 16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. 17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.

We might profitably take Paul’s exhortation to Timothy and apply it to ourselves:

1 Timothy 4:13... give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine...15 Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all. 16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.
