What is the significance of Song of Solomon?

What is the deeper meaning of Solomon's Song?

Thank you for asking a question on www.thisisyourbible.com

Solomon composed 1,005 songs - 1 Kings 4:32

Only one has been recorded in scripture.

The Song of Solomon is actually called the ‘Song of Songs’ which in Hebrew carries the meaning of the greatest song.

The song is about the betrothal and marriage of a man and a woman. The woman is called the Shulamite which is the feminine form of Solomon (meaning ‘peace’). The man appears in the song as both a shepherd and king Solomon. Solomon is a type of Christ.

The key to the song is psalm 45 entitled ‘A Song of loves’.

This speaks of a King and his bride.

Psalm 45:6 Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever...

The writer to the Hebrews confirms that the king is Christ.

Hebrews 1:8 But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever...

Psalm 45 verse 10 speaks to the prospective bride and the words are to be received of all who would be part of the bride of Christ.

Psalm 45:10 Hearken, O daughter, and consider, and incline thine ear; forget also thine own people, and thy father’s house; 11 So shall the king greatly desire thy beauty: for he is thy Lord; and worship thou him.

Matthew 10:37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me:

In the New Testament the relationship of Christ and his church is that of a bridegroom and his bride as the following show:

John 3:29 He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled.

Matthew 9:15 And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast.

Matthew 25:1 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.

2 Corinthians 11:2 For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.

Ephesians 5:31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. 32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

Revelation 19:7 Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.

Solomon wrote by inspiration of God. Once we understand that the subject of the Song of Songs is Christ and his church we can look for the spiritual lessons in the text by comparing how the words are used elsewhere.

Those who have believed the gospel and been baptised into Christ should follow his example and become more like him in their lives. In the Song of Songs the man’s description of the woman mirrors her description of him. The physical attributes make little sense unless converted into character traits. The man is the ideal that Christ is; the woman is the ideal that we are trying to attain to.

As we might expect being the greatest love song, the Song of Songs has great spiritual depth which is not easy to fathom, but well worth spending time on.

Proverbs 25:2 It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.

I hope you have found this helpful.

May God bless you.
